I’ve always been struck by this view of La Crosse. Many folks like to hike up Grandad’s bluff and get a view of the whole city. But for me, this view as you arrive in Downtown La Crosse is one of my favorites. The dog-right turn up ahead marks the center of the retail section of Downtown La Crosse and Leithold’s Music store. It’s just cool I think.
This piece is still in the early stages but I’m already excited about how this will come out.
You’ll notice that there are pencil squares on the canvas. This technique helps me understand proportions within the scene as I’m laying out the idea. At the moment, and mainly due to the weather in Wisconsin, I paint indoors using reference photos I’ve taken. In the last 6 months, Wisconsin has experienced -40F all the way to 95F with high humidity… (sometimes this is in the same week!) which makes planning any “en plein air” trip difficult to plan.
Onwards!
